There is one question we always get on the tour, “how did you learn all this history and ghost stories?” That isn’t the easiest question to answer. When the tour first started, information was gathered through various sources. First was the history, which came from many different places. Of course, things started with numerous Google searches but that was just scratching the surface. We had to dig deeper to find the kind of stories we wanted to share. That lead us to Phil Goodstein and his historical books. What a fountain of Denver information he is! He may be the crankiest historian and tour guide in Denver, but his knowledge can’t be matched. Little did we know, years later we would begin working with Phil and would learn even more secrets hidden throughout the city. His books gave us a great foundation we needed to begin going to the next step of research for the tour. You can find some of his best-selling books at https://darksideofdenver.com/store/
The next step was interviews and conversations with people who have had experiences in these historic buildings. We have talked to numerous security guards, front desk employees, managers, owners, and anyone who would give us a few moments of their time. We learned personal stories that haven’t been shared on the internet or written down. These personal experiences we learned became the backbone of our tales. When someone shares such stories with you and you see tears well up in their eyes, the hair on their arms stand up as they recount what they went through, it leaves an impression. You need emotion for a good story and these personal sightings provided just that.
The final step in the research was working with psychics and paranormal investigative teams. When you operate a ghost tour, you meet some very special people. People that have gifts to see on the other side or the tools to get a glimpse of things not normally seen. Sometimes they would offer things that would collaborate some of the stories. When a psychic starts telling your story before you share it, you start to listen to find the details you have missed. We have met many psychics over the years but one has always stood out to us. We currently are working with renowned psychic Carol Whitebear, whose gift she shares with us has helped the tour and she is now joining us on our own paranormal investigative series.
We have worked with several paranormal researchers. Each team has their own style, techniques, and passion for the field. We have learned how to do our own investigations through these experiences and often do our own investigations now to find out details of some of these stories. We have begun offering public investigations at the historic Tattered Cover on Colfax. It is a limited series and has limited space.
